The university of Karlsruhe is one of the oldest technical universities in Germany with an excellent worldwide reputation, which also shows in leading positions in university rankings . The fusion of the University of Karlsruhe and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, a major research institute of the Helmholtz Association on 1 October 2009, created the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, one of the world's largest research and teaching facilities.
