Bachelor's program in Applied Environmental Informatics and Earth Observation

Regular duration of studies: 6 semesters

ECTS credits: 180

Course language: German

with restricted admission: no

Study structure and contents
The Bachelor's program in Applied Environmental Informatics and Earth Observation focuses on describing, understanding and analyzing the complex interactions between humans, nature and technology in an interdisciplinary manner. The applied environmental informatics acts as a bridge between different disciplines from the fields of geosciences and environmental sciences. For example, students learn methods from applied computer science as well as measurement methods from the geosciences, geodesy and remote sensing. At the same time, the basics of environmental sciences are taught.

The study program has a strong inter- and transdisciplinary focus and provides a solid, broad-based, subject-related basic education in the natural and engineering sciences in the field of environmental sciences and methods of earth observation. Modern data acquisition and evaluation options - including the use of AI methods - for large amounts of data are just as much a part of the portfolio as geostatistical methods, including the spatial relationships of objects in the built and undeveloped environment. This is accompanied by interdisciplinary skills, including the responsible and critical assessment of results and their foundations.

The course content is structured into individual modules that extend over a maximum of two semesters. In addition to a fixed compulsory part, the course is supplemented by the choice of an elective profile, which in turn contains fixed modules. The study program is characterized by a high proportion of practical work, which consists, for example, of internships accompanying lectures.

A good knowledge of mathematics, physical principles of the environment, an interest in computer science and modern methods of data analysis as well as a willingness to work carefully are essential for the above-mentioned range of topics.
Qualification goals
The study program provides students with the scientific foundations and methodological skills in the field of applied environmental informatics and earth observation. The main objectives of the course are to acquire the ability to successfully complete a Master's degree program and to be able to apply the acquired knowledge in a professional context.

Graduates of the Bachelor's study program have basic knowledge of the acquisition, processing and analysis of time and space-related data as well as basic technical, methodological and legal knowledge in applied environmental informatics and earth observation and have an insight into the professional fields. They have sound knowledge and methods of acquiring knowledge in order to familiarize themselves with further issues.
