Mall-Umweltpreis Wasser
Once a year, the Roland Mall Family Foundation awards the "Mall-Umweltpreis Wasser" to one creative and innovative bachelor’s thesis, one master’s thesis, and one dissertation in the divisions of water and environment, all written by students at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The total prize money amounts to a maximum of 8,000 euros, which is distributed among these three categories.
Who is eligible to apply?
All students at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology who have successfully completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree or a doctorate on topics such as sustainable stormwater management, blue-green infrastructure, securing the drinking water supply, wastewater treatment, sustainability in groundwater and surface water management, and adaptation to climate change. There are two ways to apply:
- Students may apply with a letter of recommendation from their supervising institute or professor.
- The respective institute or its representatives may submit a nomination if they have supervised a thesis they consider worthy of an award.
The thesis must not be more than one year old at the time of application.
Required documents
The following documents must be submitted with the application:
- A German-language abstract of approximately three pages
- Thesis in digital form
- Any scientific publications
- Letter of recommendation from the professor / supervisor
- Thesis’s or doctoral degree report

Award Ceremony
The prize will be awarded at the Department ceremony of the KIT-Department of Civil Engineering, Geo and Environmental Sciences.
